Q&A with Ally Hilfiger

Ruthie Silver had a chat with Ally Hilfiger to find out more about what motivates and inspires her as a designer.

image2-2.jpegWhen did you first realise that you wanted to be a designer?

When I was in my early twenties I worked as a stylist for fashion designers, actresses and Musicians. I learned that I felt more passionately about designing the clothes instead of choosing them.

What role do you think social media plays in fashion today?

I think Social media has massive influences on fashion. It taught me that there are no rules and anyone can be a fashionista!

How does your family inspire and motivate your designs?

My family and I are very very close. We are always showing each other the latest most interesting finds in fashion and teaching each other  about “what is cool”. Everyone has a different perspective of what cool is, and that is alone- very “cool”

image3.jpegWhat was your biggest fear about starting your own line again?

The stress and time it requires. But I learned that I can make it a little less stressful than running  a major brand. I don’t ever want to be compared to my fathers company. I love my heritage, but I am my own designer.

Ambition or talent: which do you think is more important for success?

BOTH!!!!! Equally

In what place are you and your family the happiest? Why?

In Mustique- it’s where we grew up. The sun and sea are soothing and relaxing for all of us. It is all about family.

image1What is your greatest achievement so far?

Two things: my daughter Harley and the amazing relationship I have with my husband Steve, and my book BITE ME (I guess that is three!)

What ambitions do you still have?

I still want to go back to acting, and take it very seriously. I have a lot to give to the world. I want to do it all. Why not!?!

What lessons from your childhood do you still carry with you in everyday life?

To treat everyone very lovingly. To listen to my instincts.
